With Star Wars weekends coming up at Disneyland, and my not-so-secret happiness that Disney and Star Wars are a thing, my craft today had to have the Force behind it.
Like my Yoda bag from last year, I wanted it to be something wearable that a fan could take to the park. I also decided there should be options to make these appeal to both boys and girls. Or men and women - I don’t judge. I’d wear these in a heartbeat.
To make these Star Wars hair clips or shoe toppers, you'll need this pattern, felt, glue and ribbon. Craft floss is optional. Cut around the outside edge of each shape. I like to print a second copy and color each character in for reference as I make them. Plus, it's always fun to color.
For this tutorial, I'm going to demonstrate using Princess Leia. I went with dark brown for her hair and a flesh color for her face. Cut a felt shape using her entire head. I used the dark brown to match her hair.
After cutting the backing piece, cut apart the pattern into the individual pieces you'll need. I could have left all her hair together, but I wanted a little gap to create her center part. Cut out each piece from the appropriate color of felt.
Draw her eyes on with a permanent marker, using the pattern as a guide for placement.
Cut a 1" piece of ribbon. Run a bead of glue across each end and glue in place on the back of the first piece of felt as shown. The glue should run horizontally so there's a gap in the middle.
After the glue has dried, turn the piece right side up. Glue the front pieces on top.
For a couple of the characters with a little finer detail, like Chewbacca's eyes and eyebrows and the top line on the Stormtrooper, I used some craft floss and stitched those on. A pen will work on these areas, you'll just need to use a light touch.
To use these as hair clips, simply slip a clip into the ribbon loop on the back.
You could also slide them onto a plastic headband, and wear several at once.
To wear them on your shoes, just slide them onto the shoelace before lacing them up.
May the Force be with you!
