I hadn’t planned on sharing this project until next week, but when I finished this month’s mug mat I knew I wasn’t going to be able to wait. In fact, I loved it so much I made two more as soon as I finished the first one!
This is actually a pretty easy one. To make this you’ll need:
2 cups cut from fabric (flip pattern for second)
1 cup cut from fusible fleece
1 cup cut from Insul-Bright
2 lids cut from fabric (flip pattern for second)
1 lid cut from fusible fleece
2 sleeves cut from fabric (flip pattern for second)
1 sleeve cut from fusible fleece
Apply the fusible fleece to the wrong side of all three front pieces.
Pin the two sleeves right sides together. Stitch around with a 1/4” seam, leaving 1 1/2-2” open on one straight side.
Clip the corners. Turn right side out. Press, turning in the edges of the opening. Set aside.
Do the same with the lid, making sure that the opening is on the bottom edge.
Layer the cup Insul-Bright, cup front with right side up, and cup back with the right side down. Pin. Stitch, leaving 2” open on one side.
Clip the corners. Turn right side out. Press, turning in the opening.
Top stitch around the cup, close to the edge.
Pin the sleeve to the front of the cup. This isn’t an exact science, just put it where it feels right. I think all three of mine are a little different.
If you’d like to create the gift card pocket, top stitch close to the sides and bottom of the sleeve, leaving the top open. If you don’t want the pocket just sew across the top too. Make sure you’re catching the cup when you sew the sides.
Pin the lid to the front with the top edges even. Top stitch close to the edge all the way around the lid. You’re stitching through several layers in some places on this project, so you may want to switch to a larger needle and/or use a walking foot.
Stitch again 1/2” from the bottom edge of the lid, following the curve.
Stitch one more row 3/8” above the last, corner to corner, still following the curve.
I don’t know why, but the hardest part for me is always actually putting a mug on the mat. Okay, I probably do know why - I don’t want to cover it up! 😉
Confession - I didn’t plan the gift card pocket from the get-go, it came to me during construction.
The holidays are coming (I know, I know) and I’ll bet you know someone who would love one of these with a matching coffee cup sleeve!
